Liver transplant

Liver transplantation is a surgical procedure to transfer part of the liver of a healthy or deceased person, who has recently died, to a patient with liver failure. The first liver transplant for a person took place in 1983.

At first, the results were very poor, as few patients survived in the first year.

However, advances in surgical expertise, in the selection of donors and recipients, in medical care and anesthesia, and in new drugs in controlling infection and preventing and treating rejection have now made results much better than before, and many patients are returning to their normal lives.
