In this new episode of “

 Tout Sexiquer

”, we talk to Sandrine Graneau, 38, a private nurse.

In April 2019, the mother of three fell victim to Period-Related Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) as a result of using a menstrual cup.

Sandrine Graneau then escapes death at the cost of a quadruple amputation, of the feet and part of the fingers.

She publishes with Claudine Colozzi the book

Toxic Shock, Should we be afraid of hygienic protections

, published by Flammarion (18.50 euros).

In this episode, to be found above, this inhabitant of Montoir-sur-Bretagne (Loire-Atlantique) recalls in particular that the wearing of internal protections must last from four to six hours maximum.

And not all night, up to twelve hours, as some manufacturers indicate, relying on a long period of use as "a great marketing asset".

Guilt of the victims

The 30-something recalls the importance of washing your hands with soap and water before inserting protection into the vagina, and insists on the interest of alternating internal and external protections, with towels or period panties . Sandrine Graneau also ensures that you should avoid wearing a menstrual cup before menstruation, because their use can increase the risk of toxic shock. And, finally, reminds that daily sterilization of these cuts must be carried out.

“I find that we make women feel very guilty because they have not done well.

But it's not for women to feel guilty.

It is up to manufacturers to question themselves.

They have a role to play, they have a responsibility.

They must issue clear and reliable notices (...) simple and truthful ", loose notes Sandrine Graneau, who would like intravaginal protections to become medical devices, because" the regulations would be much more restrictive, the information [becoming] more reliable and mandatory ”.

Call for manufacturers

On the prevention side, Sandrine Graneau calls for information to young people, in schools and high schools, especially young girls at the time of their first period.

“It is not at 30, on a bed in intensive care, that we have to discover this disease, or, at random, by reading a leaflet, or by reading an article in the press (…) The more we will talk about it , the less taboo it will be, and the fewer cases there will be, ”concludes the young woman, guest of the

Tout Sexiquer meeting

on the occasion of World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
