The American writer and illustrator, Eric Carle, died at the age of 91, after a career during which several generations grew up on his famous children's story "The Ferry Hungry Caterpillar" (The Very Hungry Caterpillar).

The children adored the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", whose pages have punctuated holes, and they eagerly followed the adventures of this little insect, whose appetite keeps increasing.

Within a week, the caterpillar bites an apple, two pears, three plums, four strawberries, and five oranges, and don't forget the cake with chocolate and cheese ... until it becomes a wonderful multi-colored butterfly.

This book, published in 1969, has been translated into 66 languages and more than 50 million copies have been sold worldwide.

Eric Karl was born in New York State in 1929 to German parents, and he grew up in Nazi Germany, which he described in an interview with the American "NPR" radio station as a "colorless" scientist.

He graduated from the most prestigious art school in Stuttgart.

In an interview with the New York Times in 2007, Karl recounted that his father was recruited into the German army during World War II and was captured in Russia.

Erik, who was a teenager at the time, escaped the aerial bombardment of Stuttgart and avoided military service, but was recruited to dig trenches on a defensive line in western Germany.

Eric had always wanted to return to the United States, and in 1952 "he arrived in New York with a nice wallet and $ 40 in his pocket," according to his website.

Soon, the young man was recruited into the US Army and sent to Germany, but the "New York Times" indicated that he never spoke about his youth under the Nazi era.

After his military service, he worked as a graphic designer in the merchandising division of The New York Times, then became an art director for an advertising agency.

Karl wrote his first books for children in the mid-1960s, including "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You?"

The painter, known for his use of so bright colors, narrated that he was inspired by his stories from outings in nature with his father.

He said on his website: "My father used to tear the bark of the tree and show me all the creatures that used to live in it."

Actress Mia Farrow wrote in a tweet on Twitter: “Eric Karl is dead, but he left us books, and the collection of Eric Karl's books has reached more than 70 books, of which more than 150 million copies have been sold.
