The Covid-19 epidemic on the island of Saint-Martin, in the West Indies, is on the rise again.

The number of new cases thus increased from 57 between May 10 and May 16 to 115 last week, reports Guadeloupe the 1st this Wednesday, which specifies in particular that a hospitalized patient had to be transferred to Guadeloupe.

The hospital situation is also deteriorating with currently seven people being treated in the hospital.

While the current incidence rate stands at 321.7 / 100,000 inhabitants, the authorities have decided to take measures to stem the circulation of the virus.

Bars and restaurants close at 11 p.m.

This Tuesday, the prefect of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin, Serge Gouteyron, announced the closure at 11 p.m. of establishments open to the public, including bars and restaurants.

In the Dutch part of the island, a curfew at the same time has also been implemented since May 23.

There, the number of vaccinated inhabitants is however higher than in the French part of the island where according to the Regional Health Agency, the vaccination coverage rate of people over 18 years old is 19.16%. (against 28% in the Dutch part).

"Without improving the health situation, more restrictive measures will be taken next week at the latest," the prefecture said on Facebook.
