How to become a

shepherd for a day

or make cheese in an artisanal way. These are some of the new activities that Paradores propose to its clients to enjoy the network of historic accommodations in a different way. The

common denominator

of the recently presented program of experiences is

sustainable and responsible tourism

and has its own name:

Nature for the senses.

In this way, those responsible for Paradores intend to promote ecotourism that generates

social, environmental and economic benefits

in the territories where the different hotel establishments are located.

The project starts in Cangas de Onís (Asturias) and will be extended to around twenty of the 98 accommodations that the network has throughout Spain, to which we must add one more in Portugal, Casa da Ínsua.

Nature focuses the new proposals of the accommodation network.

After Cangas de Onís, the experiences will continue

Bielsa

(Huesca) and

Villafranca del Bierzo

(León), rural environments where nature in its purest form is the main claim.

The initiatives have been devised in collaboration with

Global Nature,

a private non-profit foundation dedicated to the protection of nature.

Proposals in nature

In the Asturian parador, the guests of this old monastery of the seventeenth century will be able to learn about rural life through the

herding of xaldas sheep,

also highlighting the work of the

bordier collie

dogs

in their livestock management.

Another proposal consists of

discovering the bearded vulture up close

in its natural habitat, in the Picos de Europa National Park, to verify its relationship with livestock in maintaining the ecosystem.

Two clients making artisan cheese.

You can also enter the sheepfolds and cabins used by the shepherds to see how the cheeses are made or

take a forest bath

, whose objective is to find oneself through the sensations that the trees and their ecosystems transmit.

There is more: discovering how

Los Bellos cheese

is made

,

avoiding the gorges of the Ponga Natural Park and strolling among caves, cliffs, sea caves, gorges and beaches that reveal how the Picos de Europa arose.

Discover rural environments

The final objective of

Nature for the Senses

is to create real opportunities for

development, employment and roots

for the inhabitants of the rural environments where the hostel in question is located.

In addition, its

biodiversity,

history and culture are

valued

.

Not surprisingly, the different activities also allow the guests of the network to get to know the towns and the way of life of their inhabitants.

In fact, it is the

local producers

themselves

who lead the activities, from which Paradores does not obtain economic benefits and which are

aimed at all audiences

.

They will be available throughout the year following the security protocols set by Covid 19.

Galician artist

Lara Lars was used

to

illustrate and transmit the new initiative

, who through the

collage

technique

has been inspired by "the elements of interest" that are found when visiting each parador: "the immediate surroundings, the

surroundings natural

".

In his opinion, "after the time lived, many people when they travel, they want to

reconnect with the nature

that surrounds the place where they are staying and that already has cultural value for the various architectures of interest of the Paradores ".
