explains what we know about this variant.

What is the situation in the Bacalan district of Bordeaux?

A particular mutation of the so-called British variant, which had already been identified in France in other regions, is at the origin, for the first time, of a cluster in the Bacalan district of Bordeaux, identified last Friday.

From 51 cases last week, we rose to 60 cases, announced this Tuesday Benoit Elleboode, regional director of ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

"Two chains of contamination have been identified, with two patients originally zero," he said.

These chains have gone through birthday parties, parents' reunions and co-workers.

But we have not identified a particular event.

The virus also passed through an annex of the town hall and medico-social establishments.

What do we know about this mutation?

This mutation "suggests a more contaminating aspect of the virus, even if we have not yet demonstrated it, but a certain number of indicators reassure us since none of the positive people has had a serious form", explains Benoit Elleboode.

Positive people are "young people [less than 50 years old], and unvaccinated, which means that this variant does not pass over the vaccine.

»In Bordeaux, 50% of people over 50 and 80% of over 65 are vaccinated.

How will the vaccination operation for this variant be organized?

The Bordeaux mega-center [installed at the exhibition center] began to vaccinate people from Bacalan who came spontaneously last weekend. But a vaccination center, dedicated to this variant, will be installed from Wednesday in the heart of the Bacalan district, in the premises of the animation center at 139, rue Joseph-Brunet, that is to say next to the center of screening open since Friday. The vaccination center will welcome the public from Wednesday at 2 p.m., then every day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., announced the mayor of Bordeaux Pierre Hurmic. He will be able to perform 200 vaccinations per day, and should operate for a minimum of three weeks. No need to prove that you live in the neighborhood to come and get vaccinated."We will do as simple as possible and call for the responsibility of the population, who are playing the game for the moment," explains Benoit Elleboode. Access to this center must be facilitated in order to obtain massive membership. "

How many additional vaccine doses will be devoted to this variant?

The State has confirmed the delivery to the ARS of 19,000 additional doses of Pfizer and Moderna, to specifically address the issue of this variant.

“19,000 doses is considerable, insisted Benoit Elleboode, since the Bacalan district represents around 10,000 people, knowing that some are already vaccinated.

We had estimated the need at 16,000 doses to create a buffer zone, we were given more to have a safety margin.

"We must quickly acquire group immunity, and for that we must vaccinate" hammered Mayor Pierre Hurmic.

What are the other measures implemented to counter this variant?

The objective is to create a “buffer zone” as quickly as possible in the Bacalan district and the surrounding area, to prevent the spread of this virus, insisted Benoit Elleboode. For this, several measures have been put in place such as the installation of a screening center which has already screened 900 people since Friday, and the closure of a school. "It was also necessary to inform the inhabitants so that they can go quickly to be tested", adds Pierre Hurmic, who also considers that "the secret of success in the face of this type of variant is the responsiveness of all the players. . "The appearance of this variant is in any case the proof" that it is necessary to continue to apply the barrier gestures even if one is vaccinated, completes Benoit Elleboode, in particular in our region which has been relatively preserved, and where it there are therefore fewer people who are immune. We have between 6 and 9% of the population who would have had the Covid.
