Less than 24 hours after Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko forced a plane to land on Belarusian soil and jailed journalist and activist Roman Protasevich, the president has now made further restrictions on the country's freedom of the press, according to Reporters Without Borders.

These laws will come into force within a month, making it illegal for reporters to cover demonstrations without the formal approval of Belarusian authorities.

Live video or audio broadcasting online will be completely banned and it will also be illegal to publish opinion polls that have not been approved by the country's authorities.

The new legislation also means a ban on all publication that does not benefit national interests, which are defined by the authorities in the country.

Currently, 24 journalists are imprisoned in Belarus.

Ten of them previously belonged to the country's most popular independent news source, tut.by, which was shut down last week by Belarusian authorities.
