Moderna announced this Tuesday that its vaccine against Covid-19 effectively protects 12-year-old children, a step forward in vaccination since the doses of this company
could become the second option for that age group in the United States
.
According to the
AP
agency
, earlier this month in both the United States and Canada the Pfizer vaccine was licensed for use in 12-year-olds.
Moderna's goal is to be next on the list to vaccinate children of this age.
Data from their TeenCove study that tested the vaccine in teens and children will be made
available to the US Administration and other regulators next month.
The company has developed its analysis on more
than 3,700 individuals
from 12 to 17 years old.
Preliminary results show how the vaccine triggers in them the same signs of immune protection as in adults, and in the same way
causes in children the same side effects, such as headaches, arm pain and fatigue.
No contagion of the virus was detected among those who received the two doses of Moderna's vaccine compared to the children who received placebo injections.
The company has announced in a press release that the vaccine appeared to be 93%
effective two weeks after the first dose was administered.
Although children are much less likely to become seriously ill from the coronavirus than adults, they represent, in the United States,
14% of infections
.
A total
of 316 children have died from Sars-CoV-2
, according to data provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Pfizer and Moderna have already started testing younger children, ranging in age from 11 years to six months.
The test is more complex.
If teens get the same dose as adults, researchers are now testing giving smaller doses to smaller ones.
The
results, experts say, will be available in the fall.
