History of cable car accidents in Europe since 1970

Several cable car accidents or electric ski lifts have occurred in the last fifty years in Europe, similar to the accident that killed 14 people and seriously injured one person on Sunday in Stresa in northern Italy, after a cable car crashed, and we review the most prominent cable cars in Europe from 1970 to the present day :

- September 5, 2005: A concrete block weighing 800 kilograms fell from the helicopter it was transporting and hit a cable car near Sölden in the Austrian region of Tyrol, killing nine German skiers, six children and three adults.

November 11, 2000: 155 people are killed in a fire in a mountain train in a tunnel connecting the Kaprun ski station to the Kitzchenaihorn River in the Austrian Alps.

Only 12 people survived the fire.

July 1, 1999: 20 people are killed in the crash of the cable car of the Astronomical Observatory in Pic-Bord, near the Saint-Etienne ski station in the French province of Haut-Alpes.

Experts believe that the direct cause of the accident is a malfunction of the brake system in addition to great negligence in operating conditions.

February 3, 1998: An American military plane cuts a cable car at the Cavalese ski station in the Dolomiti Mountains in Italy.

Twenty cabin passengers were killed.

- January 13, 1989: A few days before the fogany ski lift in France was put into service, a cabin broke off and fell at a height of 200 meters, killing eight technicians who were experimenting with it.

March 1, 1987: The fall of a pole in a ski elevator in Luz-Erdidan, France, destroyed about fifty cabins carrying about 200 skiers, killing six and wounding nearly a hundred.

February 13, 1983: 11 dead in the Aosta Valley, Italy, as a result of a human error that led to a collision between two compartments.

March 10, 1976: 42 dead in the fall of a cable car in Cavalese, Italy, after a cable break.

- October 26, 1972: A collision between two compartments during experiments at the Duzalp station in France resulted in the deaths of nine technicians.

July 13, 1972: 13 dead in Peten-Bettemeralp, Switzerland, in a cable car crash.

December 6, 1970: A cable car falls near Merano in the Dolomiti Mountains in Italy, killing five people.
