On May 24, 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest was held for the first time in Lugano, Switzerland. It was organized with the aim of cultural unification of Europe, as well as to attract the attention of potential viewers to television. Over the past years, more than 1,500 songs have been played on the show. Ireland remains the leader in terms of the number of victories in the competition: its representatives became laureates seven times. Russia managed to take first place only once, in 2008 - then Dima Bilan went to Eurovision for the second time.
