Two brown bears have been shot dead after breaking out of their enclosure in a zoo in England.

At Whipsnade Zoo in Dunstable, a good 40 kilometers northwest of London, the two females managed to climb over a tree that had fallen in strong winds into the neighboring enclosure, where they attacked a wild boar.

According to the zoo, when the incident occurred on Friday, the zoo had no choice but to euthanize the bears, as the animals posed an immediate threat to people.

One had to intervene directly so that the bears did not get out of the wild boar enclosure, which was only equipped with a low fence.

An anesthetic would not have worked for 20 minutes, and during this time the animals could become unpredictable and aggressive.
