At that time, people generally did not have enough food. As an agricultural science and technology worker, Yuan Longping felt self-blame, and deeply realized the meaning of "food is the heaven for the people".
In July 2013, in an interview with senior overseas Chinese media organizations organized by China News Agency, Yuan Longping was asked what kind of motivation made him so old, and he spared no effort to solve the food problem in China and the world.
He said that the external reason is that he has experienced the age of not having enough food, and the internal factor is always feeling that he can do better.

What motivation is inspiring me, I still can’t figure it out. I always feel that I still have the ability and potential to tap, but I’m still not satisfied.
[Explanation] In 1960, Yuan Longping began a rice planting experiment. In order to find male sterile rice plants, he traveled all over China for 6 years.
From selection, experimentation, failure, to re-selection, re-seeding, and re-observation...After experiencing repeated failures, the article "Male Sterility of Rice" was finally published in the "Science Bulletin" in 1966. This opened the prelude to hybrid rice research in China.

"Male Sterility of Rice" was published, it attracted attention at home and abroad. As Mr. Yuan mentioned many times, the research of hybrid rice received the support of relevant state departments and the care of senior leaders during very difficult times. It is precisely because of this that over the past 50 years, Mr. Yuan has led the research team to continuously explore and innovate, overcome one difficulty after another, innovate research results one after another, and bravely climb the peak of science, which has made great contributions to the food security of our country and the world. This paper has more extraordinary meaning and great value.
[Explanation] In 1973, at the second national hybrid rice scientific research collaboration meeting, Yuan Longping, on behalf of the Hunan Province Rice Male Sterile Line Research Cooperative Group, made a speech "Progress in Breeding Three Lines Using'Wild Abortion'" and officially announced The three-line indica hybrid rice was successfully matched.
Since then, hybrid rice was first promoted in Hunan and then blossomed and bear fruit everywhere in China. The average rice yield per mu has also been "surging" all the way.
In 1996, the former Ministry of Agriculture of China proposed a super rice breeding plan.
The scientific research team led by Yuan Longping succeeded in breaking the problem of super-high-yield rice breeding through the combination of morphological improvement and utilization of heterosis, and constantly refreshed the output, from 700 kg per mu to 800 kg, 900 kg, 1000 kg, 1100 kg... The average yield per mu of three-generation hybrid rice early and late double-cropping rice will also exceed 1,500 kg in Hengnan County, Hunan Province in November 2020.
In 2017, when he learned that the Institute of Subtropical Agricultural Ecology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences had cultivated a 2.2-meter "giant rice" in Changsha, Yuan Longping went to the experimental field for the first time to observe the growth of the "giant rice", and excitedly said that this is what he always talks about as "grass".
