The jury for the Princess of Asturias Awards has awarded activist Gloria Steinem the prize in the Humanities category.

Steinem (Ohio, 1034) is one of the most respected voices in the fight for women's rights around the world.

She was one of the protagonists of the second wave of the movement, which emerged between the late 1960s and early 1970s in the United States.

In 1963, she infiltrated the Playboy mansion disguised as a bunny to explain in a 'gonzo' report how women were treated there. And as a journalist, she captained Ms magazine in the early 1970s. Her nose as an activist has put her where she needed to be in almost every important moment in America in the second half of the 20th century: in the March on Luther King's Washington, in the White House the day Kennedy left for Dallas, in the abortion clinics during the Roe vs. Wade battle ... A great friend of the Clintons, positioned herself in favor of the candidacy of Hillary Clinton in the elections of 2016 and was one of the voices that most harshly criticized Donald Trump during his term.

At age 22, she became pregnant. The doctor who performed the abortion made her promise two things: to keep her name a secret and to do whatever she wanted with her life. He dedicated his memoirs to him, On the road (Alpha Decay), where he narrates a life devoted to activism and the defense of equal rights.

In recent years Steinem has become a benchmark, one could almost say pop, for the younger generations.

Something that is explained by his enormous ability to connect with younger voices: he gets along wonderfully with Lena Dunham, also with Amanda Gorman.

The fourth wave feminist has rekindled interest in her life and this has been translated into audiovisual products that have brought her story to the screen, such as the television series Mrs. America, where the internal struggles between feminists were portrayed, or the film The Glorias, pending release, where actresses Alicia Vikander and Julianne Moore get into his skin.
