• Seven months after the partial destruction of Alpha Park, in Saint-Martin-Vésubie, six wolves out of thirteen were found and placed in a safe place.

  • According to the French Biodiversity Office and testimonies, five are dead and two others are still wanted.

  • Studies began in April for a reconstruction of the site without further details on their future for the moment.

More than seven months after the monster floods that ravaged the valleys north of the Alpes-Maritimes, the Alpha Park, dispossessed of its wolves, is still looking for a future.

20 Minutes

takes stock.

What happened to the thirteen animals in the park?

Since the bad weather, six wolves (three gray, that is to say all, and three blacks, out of seven) have been found and transferred, in particular within the Sanctuary of the Wolves in Deux-Sèvres, a partner establishment of the Alpha Park.

Sadly, the three white wolves "are dead," the department says.

Two bodies were found and for the third specimen, there has been "no sighting since November 2020".

Remain the other four black wolves: according to "corroborating testimonies" and an "investigation of the French Office of biodiversity (OFB)", two died and two are still in the nature, specifies the department.

Is research continuing?

This male and female are still the subject of research, confirms the community.

It specifies that the OFB is the only one competent to lead them but that an “animal keeper of the park” systematically accompanies the agents in the field.

And the news is only half good.

"We have sporadic observations of the young wolf but no longer of the Alpha male", indicates the OFB.

What future for the park?

It is still unclear.

"The department is working alongside the Mixed Syndicate for the Development of Vésubie and Valdeblore to define an overall project for the Boréon", access to which must be re-established, indicates the community, without further clarification. at this stage.

What is certain is that the Wolves will not be back this summer, contrary to what the union and the department projected in December.

“Activities” will nevertheless be offered from the end of June “on the part of the park that may be accessible”.

For the reconstruction of the destroyed facilities, studies began in April, “barely out of the snowy period”.

They concern the perimeter fence, depollution and rehabilitation of the site.
