According to the fourth Fraternity Barometer, produced by Ifop * and published by Le Parisien, this Sunday, three quarters of French people are suspicious of people outside the close family, friendly or professional circle.

According to the results of this study, distrust of people outside the inner circle increased in 2021 to 72%, from 65% in April 2020, and 62% in April 2019.

Paradoxical opinions

Asked about immigration, 71% of the French believe that there are enough immigrants in France and that welcoming more is not desirable, but they are also 73% to recognize that immigrant workers occupy jobs that the French don't want. "In general, the impression emerges that the French are ready individually, at their level, to act for others, but that at the country level, they are rather unfavorable to open public policies. immigration, but also which would favor minorities to the detriment of the majority ”, analyzes François Legrand, of the Opinion and Business Strategy department of Ifop.

The paradox is also found in the notion of diversity.

Almost 91% of respondents describe France as "a country of diversity", but only 85% consider it "a good thing".

For 74% of those polled, diversity creates “problems, conflicts”, 55% deem it worrying, while 68% consider that it is a “force for the country”.

* Fraternity barometer carried out by Ifop for the Fraternity Lab between April 27 and 30, 2021 on a sample of 1,553 people representative of French society aged 18 and over via an online questionnaire.
