The French serial killer Michel Fourniret is dead. The 79-year-old died in hospital on Monday, as the Paris public prosecutor announced.

He died around 3 p.m., it said in a message.

It had previously become known that Fourniret had already been admitted to the Pitié Salpétrière hospital in Paris at the end of April.

The Justice Department did not provide any information about his health.

However, media reported that his condition was extremely serious.

Fourniret, also known by the media as the “monster of the Ardennes”, and his ex-wife were sentenced to life imprisonment in May 2008.

Fourniret had kidnapped, raped and murdered at least eight young girls and women in France and Belgium.

His ex-wife helped him with this.

In 2018, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for another murder.

He is considered one of the worst serial killers in France.

Most recently, Fourniret had also admitted complicity in the disappearance of a nine-year-old in the greater Paris area 18 years ago.

However, several police searches for the body of Estelle Mouzin were unsuccessful.

Last November, among other things, Fourniret was hospitalized after a fit of weakness in his prison cell. “Le Parisien” wrote, for example, that the 79-year-old suffered from Alzheimer's and heart problems, among other things.
