On May 1st last year, Beijing’s new version of the Domestic Waste Management Regulations was formally implemented, putting forward higher requirements for waste classification.

After the implementation of the regulations, various communities in Beijing started garbage sorting.

The changes are obvious. For example, some communities are equipped with new sorting trash bins, and there are more sorting volunteers wearing red armbands on duty next to the bin stations.

The separation rate of kitchen waste in Beijing continues to increase, and the waste reduction is equivalent to two Asuwei landfills.

However, some communities have also been exposed to problems such as kitchen waste seepage, peculiar smell, mixed investment and mixed transportation.

In order to understand the real situation of waste classification and reduction in Beijing in the past year, a reporter from the Beijing News selected 24 waste classification demonstration communities and 24 ordinary communities in Beijing’s six districts for investigation.

All the surveyed communities require garbage classification, and 96% of the communities can clearly see the garbage classification posters.

The trash cans are basically equipped, except that no hazardous trash cans have been found in Dongli District, Taipingqiao, Fengtai District.

However, the phenomenon of mixed waste investment is still relatively serious. Half of the 48 communities have obvious mixed investment; 14 communities have slight mixed investment. For example, some other trash bins in Jufuyuan, Chaoyang District have hawthorn, hawthorn, Vegetable leaves, skewers with food; only 10 communities did not find mixed investment.

Among the 48 communities, the reporter directly saw residents throwing garbage in broken bags in 24 of them. Among them, the separation rate of kitchen waste in some communities was very high and there was no debris, such as the Lvjingyuan community.

However, the situation of secondary sorting still exists. The reporter saw in some communities that there were garbage sorting instructors performing secondary sorting of plastic bags in kitchen waste.

The distance between the trash can stations in each community is reasonable, and the trash can stations in only 7 communities are set more than 100 meters away from the entrance of the building. It is relatively convenient for residents to throw garbage.

Among all the trash cans reviewed by the reporter, 42 communities had complete cover for the cover, while the cover was partially broken in the rest of the community.

Most of the barrels are not stained, and a few barrels are stained, but they basically do not affect identification.

Among the 48 communities, the trash can stations in 3 communities have obvious peculiar smells, and 7 communities can smell some peculiar smell of food waste when they are close to each other.

The two communities of Jiangong Dongli and No. 37-38 of Chegongzhuang Beili, Xicheng District, currently do not have rainproof sheds at Tongzhan, but the latter is under construction.

According to reporter's investigation and residents' findings, almost all communities have garbage sorting instructors.

The instructor will also sort the mixed waste in the bucket.

  【Investigation Motivation】

On May 1 this year, the new version of the "Regulations on the Management of Domestic Waste in Beijing" was implemented for the first anniversary. This investigation aims to explore the effect of the implementation of the new version of the regulations.

  【Sample selection】

We selected 24 waste classification demonstration communities and 24 ordinary communities in Beijing’s six districts for investigation.

Among them, Dongcheng District and Haidian District account for 8 each, Xicheng District and Chaoyang District each account for 11, Fengtai District accounted for 7 and Shijingshan District accounted for 3.

  Highlight 1 Intelligence

  Intelligent equipment is widely used

The reporter's investigation found that intelligent equipment is widely used in the promotion and practice of garbage classification.

There are inductive speakers near the trash can in Dongli Community, Taipingqiao, Fengtai District, and slogans will be played when someone approaches.

Similar installations are available in the West Road North Community of Shijingshan District and the Changying Apple Pie Community of Chaoyang District.

Various smart sorting trash cans have also been put into use.

There are large sorting and recycling bins in Xinyijiayuan, Chongwai Street, Dongcheng District, with clothing, school bags and other fabric sorting and recycling bins.

Large-scale sorting and recycling bins are equipped with LCD screens, and video animations of garbage sorting are played cyclically throughout the day.

"This video is simpler and easier to understand. Sometimes when I walk around, I will take my children to learn together. The bucket station in the community is done very well, and there is also a smart point exchange machine next to it. We can exchange points for umbrellas and garbage. Bags and so on." A resident said.

As a pilot community for information construction, Dongsheng Guanjingyuan Community in Haidian District has established an intelligent garbage classification management platform, installed humanoid recognition cameras, voice reminders, intelligent weighing, card swiping/code scanning intelligent lid opening and other technological equipment to realize all-weather supervision of bucket stations.

  Highlight 2 Convenience

  Some communities have hand-washing sinks

Many residents’ kitchen waste is thrown away at work, and some communities will ask for broken bags, which makes many people embarrassed.

The reporter found that almost all the trash cans in the community are equipped with pedals or ring pull devices.

There are a total of 7 residential buildings in the third district of Zhengxinyuan, Fengtai District, and each residential building is within 50 meters of the nearest trash can station.

The reporter noticed that the top of each trash can is equipped with a pull ring for opening the lid, and other trash cans and kitchen waste bins that produce more garbage have added pedals for opening the lid.

A hand-washing sink was also set up near a barrel station.

There are also hand-washing faucets in the sixth district of Yuandayuan in Haidian District, and disposable hand sanitizer is placed in the fourth district of Zifangyuan in Fengtai District.

However, the tabs or pedals of the trash cans in some communities have been damaged. For example, all the tabs of the trash cans in Yard 29, Majiapu East Road, Fengtai District, are basically broken.

  Highlight 3 Recycling

Set up recycling methods according to local conditions

The integration of the urban sanitation system and the renewable resource system has always been one of the measures that Beijing has been promoting. The new version of the domestic waste management regulations proposes that renewable resource recycling operators can adopt fixed site recycling, scheduled and designated recycling, and door-to-door recycling. Recycling services to facilitate the sale of recyclable items by units and individuals.

In practice, various communities have chosen various ways to adapt to local conditions to promote the recovery of recyclables.

Guangquan Community in Chaoyang District is a demonstration community for garbage sorting. There is a recycling truck in the community. Discarded cartons, cardboards, and beverage bottles from residents' homes can be handed over to them for recycling. They will also pay residents a certain amount of money.

Xueqingyuan Community, Xueyuan Road Street, is equipped with recyclable recycling baskets at each barrel site in the community.

Due to the limited capacity of recyclable trash cans, many express packages are too large for accurate delivery, and it is still difficult to put them into recyclable trash cans after dismantling. Recyclable recycling baskets can solve part of the cleaning and transportation pressure and prevent recyclability. The trash can is full.
