As part of its efforts to preserve the environment suitable for migratory birds in all its forms, the Zoo in Al Ain has monitored 100 species of wild birds, including migratory and one resident since 2017, as they made the park a safe home amidst the threats of extinction it faces in various parts of the world.

As part of these efforts, the park participated for the first time this year in the international waterbird census, in addition to sharing information with the coordinators of the international bird census, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, and the eBird database, to provide an important information base that contributes to bird conservation efforts.

The team also monitored 16 species of birds, and 223 birds registered in the census database, while the park is keen to provide an attractive environment for migratory birds to rest and the proliferation of local bird species, through its artificial lakes and vegetation cover of herbs, long reeds and trees. Hessa Al-Qahtani, head of the nature conservation program development unit at the Al Ain Zoo, said: “We have intensified our efforts to study the biological diversity of migratory birds since 2017, as we noticed their increasing migration to the park, being an ideal location for attracting this type of animals, so we monitored them monthly using cameras. And monitoring binoculars, after dividing the park into four sites for study and field research, so we worked to collect the necessary information and data, such as numbers and behaviors of birds.

She added: “Birds have a wonderful ability to cross countries and continents through their migration, which often requires long and risky trips. These migratory birds come to spend the period between autumn and spring, and even when most of them return to Central Asia to spend the summer months, while other species are considered Local birds that reside in the area throughout the year ».

Raise awareness

Environmental protection is one of the primary goals for which the Al Ain Zoo was established 53 years ago by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, when it began its efforts to protect the endangered Houbara, as well as the Arabian Oryx. The time is to spread awareness about the importance of preserving environmental diversity, the need to protect endangered species, warn of the threats they face, stress their environmental importance, and the need for international cooperation to protect them.
