In 1936 Alan Turing solved one of the great logical questions of his time by showing that certain mathematical problems cannot be solved.
For this he postulated the theoretical existence of a programmable machine, capable of performing all kinds of calculations quickly.
Although it was a purely abstract creation, the Turing machine was a crucial leap towards the foundation of computing since it was the first notion of a device that can perform all kinds of tasks at all times.
