Two new cases of atypical thrombosis (clots), including one death, associated with AstraZeneca's anti-Covid vaccine, occurred in France between April 23 and April 29, according to health authorities on Friday.

Since the start of vaccination with this vaccine, there are "30 cases, including 9 deaths in total" of rare thromboses which have occurred in France, out of more than 3,855,000 injections performed on April 29, according to the French Medicines Agency. (ANSM).

Two women, sixty and seventy

These two new cases concern women in their sixties and seventies, who have had cerebral venous thrombosis, including one case with associated thrombocytopenia (blood platelet deficiency), she explains.

Since March 19, 2021, the use of AstraZeneca's Vaxzevria vaccine has been reserved for people aged 55 and over, recalls the health agency.

Moreover, concerning the vaccine from Pfizer / BioNTech (Comirnaty) over the period from April 16 to April 29, the ANSM reports two “potential signals”.

“Following the declaration of six new cases of acute pancreatitis, including one death” over this period, all the cases declared since the start of vaccination were reviewed.

A history of pancreatic or biliary pathologies

Analysis of the 15 serious cases (14 cases of favorable outcome and 1 death) of acute pancreatitis reported in total shows that in nearly a third of cases, they occur in patients with a history of pancreatic or biliary pathologies.

These events constitute a "potential signal" which will be shared at the European level, indicates the ANSM.

Among the effects already under surveillance, "the analysis of two new cases of Guillain Barré syndrome (a neurological attack, also called acute polyradiculoneuritis), bringing the total to seven cases since the start of the vaccination" confirms that this rare side effect constitutes "a potential signal", she adds.

The benefit / risk ratio of the vaccine is not called into question.

In total, more than 15,813,000 injections were performed on April 29, with this vaccine from the American and German laboratories Pfizer / BioNTech.
