The Greens chairman Robert Habeck has called on the federal government to work internationally to suspend the patents for corona vaccines.
"Germany and the EU should join the USA and lobby the World Trade Organization for an exemption," Habeck told "Spiegel".
He supported a move by US President Joe Biden.
The US government signaled on Wednesday that it would support the lifting of patent protection in order to ramp up vaccine production internationally.
“This is a big step out of the US.
We can only fight the pandemic globally, ”said Habeck.
“Patents make sense, but if patent protection means that the pandemic cannot be combated efficiently, then that is absurd.
It is time to change direction, ”the Green leader made clear.
