A cruel crime shocked France: According to initial findings, a woman was shot by a man and then splashed with a liquid and set on fire, as the French media reported, citing the public prosecutor's office.

The woman in her early 30s succumbed to her injuries.

The suspect is therefore the woman's former partner, who had already been convicted of domestic violence.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in the municipality of Merignac near Bordeaux.

The man was arrested.

"I am appalled by this despicable crime," responded Minister Assistant to the Ministry of the Interior, Marlène Schiappa, on Twitter.

"The fight against domestic violence and femicides continues." On Wednesday evening, several people gathered near the crime scene to commemorate the woman, as was shown on television pictures.

Women's rights organizations had called for the protest.

"The city of Merignac joins this award," announced the city.

The 41-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after the crime, just a few kilometers from the crime scene, reported the regional newspaper "Sud Ouest" on Wednesday. Witnesses had previously seen a woman fall to the ground in the street, allegedly hit in the thigh by a gun. While the victim was lying on the ground, the man took a container from a van parked nearby, splashed the woman with a liquid and finally set it on fire.
