The cast of

The Staircase

begins to seriously expand.

After Colin Firth, announced in the main role, that of Michael Peterson, in this mini-series intended for HBO Max, it is now the Australian star Toni Collette who has been cast in the role of his wife Kathleen.

The program is based on the docu-series devoted to the case and aired on Netflix.

In 2001, Michael Peterson was convicted of killing his wife.

The man had claimed that his wife had died falling down the stairs (hence the title

The Staircase

), but the prosecution's forensic report revealed that the numerous injuries, especially to the back of the skull, could not have been caused only by a blunt object and not a fall.

In 2017, after 16 years behind bars, Michael Peterson had his sentence reduced to manslaughter and he was released from prison.

On all fronts

In 2018, Netflix had recovered from its catalog the docu-series

The Staircase

, signed Jean-Xavier de Lestrade (

Suspicions

in VF, and originally broadcast on Canal +), breaking it down into 13 episodes.

The documentary has been updated with new interviews made from 2012 and during Michael Peterson's release from prison.

No release date has yet been announced for the HBO series

The Staircase

.

Toni Collette will also soon make her directorial debut by adapting Lily King's novel,

Writers and Lovers

.

The star also revealed to Deadline that she was delighted to finally be able to get behind the camera, after a career of nearly 30 years.
