Prince William and Kate Middleton were married for ten years on Thursday.

According to many, the couple is one of the more stable factors of the British royal family, but the relationship also went through struggles.

The two met in 2001 at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where Kate (Catherine in full) is studying art history and William geography.

William is said to have set his eye on his future wife during a benefit fashion show, in which the art history student walked along.

In their second year of study, they share a house with two mutual friends.

"Then our love blossomed," said the prince.

Interesting detail: Kate is still in a relationship at that time, but breaks it off in order to be with William.

It will take until April 2004 before the public learns about their relationship.

During a ski trip to Klosters, Switzerland, which remains a regular holiday destination for the couple, William and Kate are photographed together for the first time.

And those paparazzi are more often on the heels of the couple.

In 2006, Kate is William's' plus one 'at the wedding of Laura Lopes, Prince Charles' stepdaughter.

It is the first time that Kate is present at an official event.

Still, dark clouds are gathering over their relationship.

Overwhelmed by all the media attention, Kate decides to distance herself from William for a few months.

Still, things soon turn out well: the couple is seen together in Klosters.

"In the end it made me stronger", Kate says afterwards.

"You discover things about yourself that you didn't realize before. I think you can often be too busy with a relationship at a younger age, so those months that we were apart were good afterwards."

Kate, meanwhile, grows into a darling of the British people, although an announcement of a marriage is eagerly awaited.

She is also jokingly referred to as 'waity Katie', because she never got engaged.

In 2010, the couple is on holiday in Kenya and William gets on one knee and asks the long-awaited question.

Kate receives a ring that belonged to William's mother Diana.

"That way my mother could still be there," said the prince in the interview that followed after they announced their engagement.

"We've been talking about getting married for some time, so it wasn't a big surprise to her. But I felt now was the right time."

On April 29, 2011, the couple married in Westminster Abbey, five months after the announcement of the engagement.

Kate wears a dress from designer Alexander McQueen and a tiara received from Queen Elizabeth.

Two billion people watch the ceremony on television and in London 600,000 people are on their feet to get a glimpse of the newly married couple.

From that day on, William and Kate can call themselves the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

At the end of December 2012 it is announced that Kate is pregnant.

She will not be pregnant for long, but she suffers from severe morning sickness and that is not escaping the media.

It is therefore decided to announce her pregnancy earlier than usual.

George Alexander Louis, the first grandchild of Prince Charles, is born on July 22, 2013.

"That was pretty exciting", the duchess says afterwards.

"We were happy to be able to share our happiness, but on the other hand I was there as a brand new mother with a newborn baby. I felt all kinds of emotions."

After George, the couple also welcomed daughter Charlotte (2015) and son Louis (2018).

And it will stop there, the duchess said at the beginning of 2020.

"It is unlikely that there will be a fourth child. I don't think William wants that."
