A case of the Indian variant of the coronavirus has been detected in Lot-et-Garonne, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Health Agency announced Thursday.

This is the first case of an Indian variant detected in mainland France.

"We identified that it was the Indian variant" about a case in Lot-et-Garonne "of a patient who returned from India," said Benoît Elleboode, regional director of the ARS, to BFMTV and CNews.

The Minister of Health Olivier Véran had indicated Tuesday that "no case of variant of Indian origin" had been detected "in metropolitan France".
