If you want to find out more about questionable virus variants from the Robert Koch Institute at the moment, you will find the following note in version B.1.1.7, which has become dominant in Germany: "The current data suggests that infections can be associated with an increased case mortality rate."

This statement is a cumbersome way of epidemiologists to say: the English mutant is more deadly. B.1.1.7 is a problem for health systems not only because of its ability to spread faster - but also because it makes those infected sicker. Karl Lauterbach, a member of the SPD and himself an epidemiologist, also points out that B.1.1.7 can cause severe disease, especially in “young people”.
