The co-founder of the German pharmaceutical

BioNTech

,

Ugur Sahin

, recalled this Thursday that the maximum effectiveness of his drug - 97% - is not reached until seven days after receiving the second dose.

In a virtual meeting with representatives of foreign media in

Germany, he

also recalled that six months after having achieved that maximum immunity, through the second dose, it begins to decline.

According to their current estimates, this would imply that, between nine months and the following year, a third will probably have to be injected, to guarantee the maintenance of maximum immunity.

The Turkish scientist has been confident that the vaccine developed by his laboratory and distributed together with his American partner

Pfizer

is "effective" also against the Indian variant.

"Our approach is based on lessons learned against cancer. We experimented with many variants and, so far, we have achieved good results in all of them," Sahin said.

"I am confident that we will also obtain good results against the Indian variant," he added, regarding this much more aggressive mutation than those previously detected.

Until now, he insisted, his vaccine had shown its effectiveness "in practically all" known mutations.

Sahin has been cautious about releasing restrictions on those vaccinated.

It is clear that this is going to occur, since "we all hope to regain normalcy", but we must avoid falling into "discrimination" between immunized citizens and those who are not.

"You have to be very cautious and not fall into the so-called 'culture of envy'," he advised.
