More and more people with mental disorders are taking pills. According to the drug prescription report from 2018, the number of prescriptions for antidepressants has skyrocketed since 2008: from 974 million daily doses to 1,491 million in 2018. The latter amount is sufficient to provide around four million people with tablets throughout the year. And the daily doses of antipsychotics used to treat psychoses such as delusions and hallucinations have also increased. Data from the Netherlands and the USA indicate that a significant proportion of patients swallow the tablets for years.
