Shadow puppets are also called “Dengying Opera”, which is a form of opera that uses animal skins to sculpt shadow figures and uses light to project the curtain.

Huazhou District, Weinan City, Shaanxi Province is known as the hometown of shadow puppets in China. Huazhou shadow puppets were included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage protection lists in 2006.

Located in the Shaohuashan International Shadow Play Expo Park in Huazhou District, there are sections such as a shadow play theater, a production workshop, and a Ming and Qing shadow play museum.

The park adopts the model of "base + shadow puppet inheritor + peasant household", and provides free shadow puppet carving training classes, places the disabled and the extremely poor, and trained more than 1,000 women with surplus labor to find jobs.

The assistance has led to more than 300 shadow puppet family workshops and formed multiple shadow puppet industry villages in Liuzhi Town and Lianhuasi Town in Huazhou, which greatly increased the output of traditional handmade shadow puppets in the district and promoted the poverty alleviation and income of surrounding women.
