Anthony Hopkins was absent from the Oscar gala when the British star was named best actor in the drama "The Father" on Sunday evening (local time) in Los Angeles.

But on Monday the 83-year-old thanked him with a message on Instagram: “Good morning.

I am here in my native Wales.

When I was 83, I didn't expect this award, really not, ”said Hopkins in the video address.

He is "very grateful" to the film academy.

At the same time, he paid tribute to his posthumous Oscar-nominated colleague Chadwick Boseman.

He left too early, said Hopkins.

Boseman died of cancer in 2020 at the age of 43.

He had been given a good chance of winning the Leading Actor Oscar for "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom".

Hopkins, who plays a demented, stubborn father in "The Father", has set an Oscar record with it.

He now holds the title of oldest actor to ever win an Oscar.

In terms of age, he surpasses the Canadian Christopher Plummer, who won the Oscar for best supporting role in the drama "Beginners" in 2012 at the age of 82.

The broadcast of the Oscar gala on US television station ABC lost more than half of the viewers compared to the previous year.

Just under ten million people saw the trophy show on Sunday evening (local time), as the industry journal "Variety" reported on Monday, citing preliminary figures from Nielsen's market researchers.

Last year there were more than 23 million on the screen.

Traditionally, the Oscars in the USA are the most watched show of the year after the Superbowl sports event.

Because of the corona pandemic, numerous award ceremonies have seen ratings drop in recent months.

The Grammy Awards in mid-March had 51 percent fewer viewers, the Golden Globes at the end of February fell 62 percent.

The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony took place in a much smaller setting due to Corona.

The main location was the historic train station building of Union Station in Los Angeles with less than 200 guests.

In the traditional Dolby Theater in Hollywood, on the other hand, there is space for more than 3,000 people.

The road movie "Nomadland" by Chloé Zhao triumphed in three main categories at the Academy Awards: as best film, for director and for Frances McDormand as best actress.

According to surveys, the films nominated this year were hardly known to the general public.

In 1998, the “Titanic” year, the blockbuster film won eleven Oscars in front of 55 million television viewers.
