Forensic Assistant Police Mao Chenqing: "Dialogue" the Dead for 24 Years

Dealing with the corpse on the spot helps the police restore the truth, inspecting the remains and restoring family members

"May 1st" International Labor Day is approaching.

In some special posts, there are a group of special workers who give in silently and contribute their strength to the development of the city.

The 52-year-old Mao Chenqing is the longest-time "veteran" figure in the auxiliary police team of the Forensic Examination Center of the Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau.

As early as 1997, he joined the forensic auxiliary police team and is now the leader of the forensic auxiliary police team.

For Mao Chenqing, his work is day and night. Many of the corpses handled by him are unnatural deaths. He must be on standby 24 hours a day. Even in the hot summer, he must rush to the team with the forensic doctor. On-site treatment.

Mao Chenqing said with a smile that he was "the closest person to the corpse."

In addition, he also conducts daily inspections on the corpse freezer of the forensic examination center and assists the forensic doctor in performing an autopsy.

Mao Chenqing said that although he is not a forensic doctor, he often assists forensic doctors in their work and contributes to the construction of a safe city, so he is proud of his work.

The wind and sun all year round, working day and night, made Mao Chenqing's skin dark.

At 52, he looks older than his actual age.

Mao Chenqing's work place is located in the forensic examination center in Bujishawan, Shenzhen, next to the funeral home. The empty yard is extremely quiet. Usually, except for Mao Chenqing and a few colleagues, there are very few people coming in and out.

In this "off the beaten track" place, Mao Chenqing has been working for 24 years, and only he can experience the ups and downs during this period.

From chef to assistant police officer

Mao Chenqing was born in the 1960s. He told reporters that in the 1990s, Shenzhen was under great development and many industries needed people, but Mao Chenqing didn’t go there until he heard about the Forensic Examination Center of Shenzhen Public Security Bureau. Need assistance, Mao Chenqing resolutely decided to sign up, and set off with luggage the next day.

Mao Chenqing is good at cooking in his hometown of Sichuan. He joined the forensic examination center at the beginning. He was mainly responsible for the meals of his colleagues in the unit. Sometimes, there were not enough manpower to assist the forensic doctor to move or dispose of corpses.

Mao Chenqing still clearly remembers that he reported to Shenzhen on June 28, 1997, "After a few days of work, he caught up with Hong Kong and returned." At that time, he had a monthly salary of 600 yuan, including board and lodging. Mao Chenqing was quite satisfied with this.

"But to be honest, at first I thought I came here just to be a cook or to help with the police dog team. I didn't expect to do the job of assisting with the handling of corpses later." However, since he has already come, Mao Chenqing must stick to it. .

Just two months after Mao Chenqing arrived in Shenzhen, he was called to the scene to help deal with the corpse. His first appearance has left him unforgettable.

It was one day in August 1997, when there was heavy rain. Mao Chenqing, who was on duty that day, was tasked to say that a body was found in a railway tunnel, blocking the tunnel's drain.

When Mao Chenqing arrived at the scene wearing a raincoat and rain boots, he smelled a stinky odor all the way, and he could only approach it cautiously.

Although 24 years have passed, Mao Chenqing still remembers this scene very clearly.

At that time, the corpse was so swollen because of the high degree of corruption, Mao Chenqing was trembling with fright, and he and four colleagues worked together to put the corpse into the car.

That night, Mao Chenqing's mind was full of scenes, and he didn't sleep well all night.

The experience of assisting a forensic doctor for anatomy for the first time also made Mao Chenqing particularly unforgettable.

He said that it was the first time he saw a scalpel. The visual impact is still fresh in his memory.

"I didn't get used to it at the beginning. It just got better later, and I don't think it's terrible anymore." Mao Chenqing said, this is a process of gradual tolerance. After more than a year of exercise, he just showed up again Not so scared anymore.

At least "three rounds" of the freezer every day

Mao Chenqing works day and night, and must be on standby 24 hours a day.

He had to rush to the scene immediately after receiving the relevant police information.

This hardship can be imagined.

Mao Chenqing introduced that all corpses that died abnormally, including suicides and accident deaths, regardless of whether they were involved in the case, would be transported to the legal inspection center to determine the cause of death, so sometimes there would be more scenes a day.

There is a small TV in the place where Mao Chenqing works, and he is very happy to watch entertainment programs in his spare time.

However, he never watched horror movies, especially those related to forensic medicine.

"The clips in the film and television dramas are all interpretations, which are quite different from the forensic examination scenes I have encountered in reality. I have been doing this work for more than 20 years and have experienced too much, so I don't watch those TV dramas." Mao Chenqing said with a smile.

It is also Mao Chenqing's job to patrol the body freezer of the Legal Examination Center at least three times a day.

The ice store has maintained a low temperature of minus 8 degrees Celsius for many years, so quiet that even a needle can be heard on the ground.

Mao Chenqing walked in it, patrolling three times a day, day and night.

His most important duty is to check whether the refrigeration equipment is faulty, whether the circuit is unblocked, whether there is a power failure, whether the door is closed tightly, etc., because any leaks may cause damage to the body.

When the forensic doctor performs an autopsy on the corpse, Mao Chenqing and other members of the dissection team must also cooperate with the forensic doctor.

The dissection time for a corpse is 2 hours to 3 hours. After the dissection, Mao Chenqing also needs to help suture the wound, clean the scene, and transport the body back to its original position.

Mao Chenqing said frankly that it would be impossible to do this job without the support of his family.

At first, his wife was surprised when he learned that he was doing this job, but she didn't say anything, and instead of blaming him, his father was proud of his son instead.

"Father told me that you are now working in the police force. This is also a contribution to the protection of the people. You must cherish this opportunity." Mao Chenqing’s father is an old party member, and he thinks his son’s Work is very glorious, which makes Mao Chenqing more motivated.

Mao Chenqing said that because of the particularity of his job, he seldom visits a friend's house for fear that the other party may be taboo.

"I'm afraid that people will have ideas in their hearts and it's hard to talk about them, so I basically don't go to visit."

Rarely go home for the Spring Festival in 24 years

It has been 24 years since Mao Chenqing's wife has been with him. Because there are still many elderly people in his hometown in Sichuan who need to take care of him, his wife can't get out of her body and can only come to reunite for a few days during the holidays.

In the past 24 years, Mao Chenqing has returned to his hometown for the Spring Festival only a few times.

"I worked in Shenzhen when my child was born. When I go back, the child is one year old and will call Dad." Speaking of this, tears flashed in Mao Chenqing's eyes.

When his uncle passed away, he couldn't go back to the funeral, which made him feel sorry.

"I lived at my uncle's house for ten years when I was a child, and I had a deep relationship with my uncle, but at that time, the transportation was inconvenient, so I couldn't go back." In Shenzhen, countless city builders like Mao Chenqing make contributions in obscurity day after day .

Only when there is no work schedule on holidays, Mao Chenqing can sit down and chat with his colleagues and friends, and relieve the miss of relatives far away.

What made him feel relieved was that the eldest son was married and his grandsons were about to go to elementary school; the younger daughter was 21 years old this year, and he was about to graduate from college.

Mao Chenqing said frankly that he had no knowledge, so he always hoped that his children could read more books.

Now that the two children are quite promising, he also feels sweet in his heart.

 "This job is reassuring"

In the eyes of outsiders, the job of forensic assistant police is a bit mysterious and extremely difficult, but Mao Chen got used to it early in the morning.

In his opinion, he is "guarding the last part of a person's life", which is very meaningful.

Moving, guarding and assisting forensic doctors to dissect corpses. Although these tasks seem to be unknown, many family members of the deceased are also grateful to Mao Chenqing because of the thoughtful and meticulous work, which makes him more aware of the importance of this job.

Due to future claims by some family members and the inability to confirm the identity of the deceased, the Legal Inspection Center still has some corpses stored for many years that cannot be cremated.

Mao Chenqing remembered that a corpse that had been stored for more than ten years was finally compared to determine the identity of the deceased.

The Legal Inspection Center then notified the family of the deceased to come and confirm.

After the 50-year-old mother came to Shenzhen from her hometown thousands of miles away, because she hadn't seen her for more than ten years, and her face had changed a bit after her body was frozen for many years, the mother could not be confirmed for a while.

Later, Mao Chenqing asked her if she remembered whether her daughter had any special marks on her body. She recalled that there was a mole on the back of her neck.

It was finally confirmed that it was her daughter who had been missing for more than ten years.

The old mother burst into tears immediately.

She said that she had always wanted to see her daughter for the last time, even if she was no longer alive, she would take her to the roots of fallen leaves.

She didn't expect that more than ten years later, her daughter's body was still kept in perfect condition and had not been cremated. She was very pleased to see that her daughter's last wish was fulfilled.

In the end, the old mother returned to her hometown with her daughter's ashes. When she left, she took Mao Chenqing's hand and thanked him.

"At that moment, I felt that my job was reassuring and valuable."

Mao Chenqing said that the work of forensic medicine is to let the deceased "speak", and what essentially reveals is the truth and justice behind the impermanence of life and the warmth and coldness of life.

Although he is not a forensic doctor, he often assists the forensic doctor to complete his work. Through "dialogue" with the deceased, he assists the police in identifying the specific cause of death and restoring the truth. Therefore, he is actually contributing to the construction of a society under the rule of law.

"I am proud of my work."
