Everyone overlooks the fact that the most important questions cannot be answered scientifically.

Even more: these answers are, strictly speaking, the prerequisite for science to be able to work out proposed solutions for policy advice.

These questions are: What do we want to achieve?

What do we have to prevent?

The answer to questions about the corona pandemic is given as a matter of course: We have to prevent people from dying.

Anyone who wants to dress this answer in a sober tone says: We have to prevent the health system from collapsing.

One could also answer: We have to prevent a generation from being irretrievably robbed of its educational opportunities.

Or: that the economy that makes everything else possible is collapsing.

Or: that the foundations of our democracy are eroding.
