• The city voted on a canopy plan last August.

The latter plans to plant 10,000 trees by 2030.

  • For this first year, the new municipal ecologist team is proud to have planted 966 trees.

  • A location of the plantations which questions some elected officials and from which the Strasbourg hypercentre has not benefited, except for the ephemeral plantings of last summer.

It was a well-contested issue during the last municipal elections.

The fight against heat islands with the tree as a challenger.

Each candidate went about his bidding, knowing who could, should, would ...

As soon as elected, the ecologist Jeanne Barseghian declared the climate emergency and in the process, during the city council at the end of August, put the canopy plan to a vote.

A greening of the urban space in a plan adopted unanimously.

The latter plans to plant 10,000 trees by 2030 to increase the Strasbourg canopy index, that is to say the shadow surface provided by the foliage of trees and which should reach 30% by 2050. Eight months later, when the “planting season” has just ended, what conclusions can we draw from it?

Is there always unanimity?

700 plantings planned, nearly 1,000 completed

From the start of the mandate, shadows hovered over the canopy plane.

Expenses deemed too high for summer and ephemeral plantings, of an effectiveness qualified as symbolic by the opposition, but justified by the mayor Jeanne Barseghian by the urgency of creating islands of freshness on the most mineral squares of the city.

Then a provisional budget to green the city on the contrary judged too weak or too timid by the same elected opposition members ...

A bit roughed up, the canopy plan has finally taken off.

If almost all the trees of the ephemeral plantations have been replanted all over the city in Sainte Catherine, the plantations have gone beyond the hopes of the new municipal team.

It is not 700 trees, but nearly a thousand (966 trees to be exact) that could be planted, against 300 on average in previous years.

"Trees, but in parks"

A more than encouraging result, but not necessarily satisfactory.

What about the mineral and main squares in the city center?

Whether it be Place Kléber, Place du Château, Place du Tribunal or Palais des Rohans, none have had the chance to be given even just one new tree.

Would that herald new ephemeral plantings this summer?

Opposition municipal councilor (Agir), Pierre Jakubowicz wonders above all, in a letter sent to the mayor last week, on the location chosen for the plantings of the 966 trees.

"You have thus planted dozens of trees in parks which, as their name suggests, already have dozens", he quipped, before criticizing, citing two real estate projects in Neudorf, projects "which will further concrete and densify ”Strasbourg.

Improvements underway for mineral squares

Reproaches swept away with one hand by the city even if it can only recognize that the large places of the hypercentre “have not yet” been affected by these earth plantations.

On the other hand, she recalls that 84 trees were planted on the very mineral square of the Hippodrome in the Rhine port district, many others in the station district, in the dairy sector, or even on the rue du 22-Novembre.

For the coming year, citizen consultation will continue and the intensification of the greening of schools is underway.

Twenty would be affected for this year 2021 ... Slowly, the canopy plan seems to take root.
