Alber Elbaz
, the audacious designer whose creations made famed French fashion house Lanvin once again an industry benchmark before his ouster in 2015, has died at 59, luxury group Richemont reports Sunday.
"With surprise and great sadness I learned of Alber's sudden death," Richemont president
Johann Rupert
said in a statement
. The cause of death was not known. Elbaz, a
Moroccan-
born Israeli
, brought shine back to Lanvin during his 14 years running France's oldest haute couture brand, giving classic tailoring a more playful twist.
He also won fans for his personable demeanor
, which set him apart in an industry where egos and complex personalities reign.
But, he was unceremoniously fired as the brand's creative director in October 2015, reportedly following a tough confrontation with Lanvin's majority shareholder, Chinese billionaire
Shaw-Lan Wang.
After some collaborations with colleagues, in 2019 he was hired by the Swiss-based luxury group Richemont.
