They say they are “on the verge of implosion”.

Breton fishermen are at their wit's end and they want to let people know.

The cause ?

"The prices are not there", according to Olivier Le Nézet.

The president of the Regional Committee for Fisheries and Marine Farming (CRPEM) in Brittany considers the problem "nagging for a year".

The latter calls in particular for a better development of French fish in supermarkets and mediums and price control in order to avoid "the yoyo of prices under auctions"

"For several weeks now, fishermen have been warning about the prices paid to abnormally low producers", indicates the Finistère fisheries committee in a press release, while "the turnover of the seafood departments of the major brands supermarkets increased during the health crisis ”.

"The crews are tired of being the adjustment variables"

According to seafarers, the problem mainly concerns deep-sea fishing (offshore), of which the major brands sell three-quarters of the production, according to the Finistère committee.

"The crews are tired of being the adjustment variables of a market which favors imports taking advantage of unhealthy social dumping", the statement continued, deeming the atmosphere "extremely tense at sea and on the quays".

"When Breton fishing catches colds, all French fishing catches the flu," said José Jouneau, president of the Pays-de-la-Loire regional fisheries committee.

"This morning, hake prices collapsed," he lamented, calling for "the whole industry to be overhauled".

Fishermen are also suffering from the closure of restaurants, the rise in the price of diesel, as well as uncertainties linked to Brexit.
