On April 23, 1521, now 500 years ago, the battle of Villalar took place, when the commune troops who were heading to Toro to take refuge, commanded by their captain Juan de Padilla, were attacked near the town that names this event by the imperial army under the command of Íñigo Fernández de Velasco y Mendoza, Constable of Castile and co-governor of the kingdom since September 1520. The defeat of the commune troops marked a turning point in the conflict.
