Sun Shuai, squadron leader of the special police squadron of the Special Patrol Detachment of the Public Security Bureau of Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, joined the special police search and EOD team when he joined the police in 2010 and has been doing EOD work for 11 years.
Year after year, he has worked hard to study the knowledge of security inspection and EOD business, successfully dismantled and dismantled 23 explosive devices of various types, and won the third-class personal merits 4 times. In 2019, he was selected as the “Ten Hundred Million” project training by the public security organs of the province Tree model.
Sweat and tears intertwined for the first time
On April 21, 2013, this ordinary day made Sun Shuai unforgettable.
On this day, a suspected explosive device was found in a farmhouse in a county in Mianyang City.
After receiving the police order, Sun Shuai immediately dispatched with the EOD squadron and drove to the scene with professional equipment to carry out disposal.
Through special equipment, the EOD police basically determined that the suspected explosive was an explosive device cleverly disguised with edible oil drums.
But is the explosive detonated remotely or timed?
Is the filling material TNT or black powder?
All are unknown.
Sun Shuai, who faced a "real guy" for the first time in his life, couldn't help sweating his palms.
He understands that once an explosive device is detonated in a civilian house, not only will the masses’ property suffer huge losses, but the evidence left by the suspect on the scene will also be destroyed.
Special EOD police must touch and move explosives at close range and manually disarm the detonation device.
"Let me go!" At the critical juncture, the EOD Special Police Yang Zhenyu took the initiative to ask for the bomb disposal. He told Sun Shuai that his baby is almost two years old. Sun Shuai carried a portable X-ray machine and other tools, and slowly moved to the front of the explosives. After detection, the possibility of timing and remote detonation was ruled out.
He carefully stretched out his hands and gently held it up, then moved to an open area outside the courtyard.
After all the personnel retreated to a safe distance, Sun Shuai fell to the ground and observed carefully. He found that the edible oil drum was molded with cement and was repeatedly wrapped with tape, revealing electric wires faintly.
He carefully peeled a hole with EOD shears, combined with X-ray detection, and judged that the detonating device was "pulling type", that is, during the movement and disposal process, once the explosive device connected to the wire is slightly stressed, it will pull the battery. The collision of positive and negative poles detonated.

After Sun Shuai's inspection, it was confirmed that the detonator was successfully eliminated.
In addition to about 10 kilograms of black powder in the explosive object, there are hundreds of steel balls filled in it. Once an explosion occurs, its lethality will increase exponentially.
For the first time, Sun Shuai felt the deadly comrades in arms, successfully dismantled a powerful explosive, and experienced the glory of the EOD police for the first time.
Touch, tension, joy and pride made the sweat and tears on his face intertwined.
Later, based on the evidence retained by Sun Shuai, criminal investigators quickly arrested the suspect who had placed explosives in retaliation against others.
After this incident, Sun Shuai had a new understanding of bomb disposal, and he decided to stick to this challenging post.
Successfully discharged 23 times in 11 years
Excellent psychological quality and calm personality are the biggest reasons Sun Shuai was selected as the EOD Special Police.
When he first arrived at the beginning of the year, Sun Shuai had zero knowledge, zero foundation, and zero practice of EOD work. Under the guidance and teaching of his master, he learned from the most basic knowledge points.
The police force also sent Sun Shuai many times to participate in various professional trainings, which benefited him a lot and made rapid progress. It summarized and explored a set of detailed and complete working procedures and standard handling procedures.
In July 2019, Sun Shuai was appointed as the squadron leader of the special police brigade’s security inspection and explosive search and explosive squadron, and became the first explosive discharger of Mianyang Public Security.
Sun Shuai said that the EOD police is like a dancer on a steel wire rope. They cannot tolerate the slightest handicap. Every action is a life and death gambling.

Sun Shuai’s dormitory and home are filled with circuit boards and professional books for practice.
"There are many types of explosive devices, and different explosive devices require different initiation methods." He said that one second of detonation will cost ten years of work. Only by constantly "charging" can it be ensured that nothing is lost.
When confronted with explosives, EOD police often have to consider that the explosive device is the only and most direct physical evidence left by the criminal suspect at the scene.
Sun Shuai said that the current EOD technology is very advanced, and some links can be replaced by EOD robots, but many special situations are beyond the robot's ability to dismantle bombs in explosion-proof suits.
Explosion-proof clothing is very heavy, especially in summer, it feels like entering a steamer, and it will take a few minutes to sweat.
Sun Shuai said that although the explosion-proof suit can withstand a certain amount of explosion within a certain distance, the body will also suffer huge damage in the face of a powerful explosive device, especially when both hands are required for precision operation, and gloves should not be worn once in operation. In the event of an explosion, the hands will be severely wounded.
In 11 years of EOD, Sun Shuai successfully dismantled, disassembled and destroyed explosive devices 23 times.
No regrets if you choose
Due to his outstanding skills and tactics for search and explosion, in recent years, Sun Shuai has been assigned by the Ministry of Public Security and the Provincial Public Security Department to support the public security agencies in Qingdao, Xiamen, Chengdu and other places to assist in the completion of security inspection and explosion tasks for various major activities.
Sun Shuai, 36 years old this year, is handsome and has yet to get married and start a family.
He said that many girls have all kinds of worries when they know their careers.
Last year Sun Shuai met a beautiful girl. She especially understood and admired the work of the EOD Special Police. The two met each other and soon fell in love.
One mistake, one second mistake is enough to make people shattered.
When the police were dispatched, Sun Shuai was full of thoughts about how to successfully dispose of the explosive device, but every time the explosion was successfully discharged, he would feel scared.
Sun Shuai is unwilling to let his parents and girlfriend know too much about his work, and does not want them to worry about himself.
The understanding and support of his family and girlfriend gave him great confidence and eased a lot of pressure on him.
Sun Shuai said that EOD is a highly dangerous profession and an indispensable part of public security work. This is a heavy burden, but someone has to carry it on their shoulders.
