The award ceremony of the "Green Academic Award", which is given to those who have made achievements in research on plants and nature conservation, was held in Tokyo on the 23rd with the attendance of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress.

The "Greenery Day" was held in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, before the "Greenery Day" on May 4, when the Prime Minister commended those who have made achievements in research on plants and nature conservation. Their Majesties also attended the award ceremony.

The winners of this year are Kazuhiko Takeuchi (69), a specially appointed professor of the University of Tokyo, who led research toward the realization of a society in which humans and nature coexist, and contributed to the expansion of activities to create a local environment. They are Tetsuyuki Tabata (66), director of the Kazusa DNA Research Institute, a public interest incorporated foundation, who pioneered the field and promoted the development of sustainable agricultural production technology.

In this, His Majesty the Emperor mentioned that the spread of the new coronavirus has changed the way of life and society, and said, "We are closely related to our society and life and protect the indispensable greenery. I think it is important to think about the technology and culture necessary to nurture. "

In addition, the individuals and groups that contributed to the local greening promotion activities were also commended, and their Majesties were applauded.

Attendance at the award ceremony was inherited from the Emperor and his wife due to the abdication of the Emperor, but this was the first time he attended because it was canceled due to the influence of the new coronavirus last year.
