Russia is banned from participating in major championships after a doping scandal, but several athletes are still allowed to compete under a neutral flag.

This also means that the Russian national anthem is not played.

The chairman of Russia's Olympic Committee has previously suggested that a piece by composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky be used instead, and now the IOC has approved the proposal.

"The IOC has informed the Russian Olympic Committee that a piece from Pyotr Tchaikovsky's No. 1 piano concerto has been approved," they said in a statement.

Tchaikovsky lived in the 19th century and has, among other things, made music for the operas Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker.

The Sports Arbitration Court (Cas) has previously denied that a patriotic Russian folk song that became popular during World War II would be used as a national anthem.
