Every day in the column "Daily ills", Doctor Jimmy Mohamed takes stock of an illness or a health problem.

This Thursday, he explains to us what to do in the event of a wrong turn, if a loved one swallows askew and chokes.

DECRYPTION

In the section "the evils of everyday life" in Sans Rendez-vous, doctor Jimmy Mohamed takes stock every day on these little everyday ailments that can rot life for some time.

This Thursday, he is interested in the "wrong way", when you swallow askew: how to react, help the person and prevent them from choking?

“Choking often happens during eating. Normally when you eat you will swallow and it will pass into the esophagus. But it is possible to go wrong because you eat too fast or have swallowed too large a bite. , and the food is going to get stuck in the trachea, in the airways, so all of a sudden the air just doesn't come through.

Let cough

When the air stops passing there are two possibilities: either the person will start to cough, they will be embarrassed, but you must leave them alone.

We do not touch it, we encourage it since the cough is a defense mechanism that will allow the small food that is stuck to be quietly expelled.

5 big slaps on the back

Either she does not produce any sound, she can no longer speak, puts her hands at the level of her throat, her eyes turn red, her lips turn blue .... In this case, there is an emergency : we put five large slaps on the back, the open hand, the flat of the hand between the two shoulder blades and the patient who is leaning a little forward.

We go there wholeheartedly because there is no risk of breaking a rib.

On the contrary, you will save his life.

Heimlich maneuver

“You have to do the Heimlich maneuver, discovered in 1974 by Doctor Heimlich. This thoracic surgeon was in a nursing home when he saw one of the residents eating a hamburger and taking a wrong turn. Heimlich created this rather intuitive technique: he got behind the patient, hugged him with both hands and, with his closed fist, pressed just below the breastbone, at the level of the stomach. makes five large compressions, pressing down with his other hand to increase the intrathoracic pressure to expel the small piece.

If this is not possible, for example because the patient is obese or unconscious, you can put him on a table with his head tilted forward, with the torso a little forward and you put the five big slaps on the back. .

Finally, if the person makes noise and if there is blood, we let him cough and above all, we call for help.

What about a baby?

We do the same thing in the back: from 1 or 2 years old, you can put it on the forearm or on your leg, the stomach against the thigh, and you first put on five large taps that will allow to expel the small object.

And then we can turn the child over and make small compressions to expel the stuck food.

The best is to do a first aid training, what is called the PSC1 training, which lasts ten hours, but which will allow you to remember it for the rest of your life. "
