Ten kilometers south of the cape of the salt flats of Mallorca, is the

Cabrera archipelago,

a place that captivates everyone who knows it for its

wild nature,

the diversity of animal species, its fascinating history and its incredible

beaches

. Made up of 19 islets, the Cabrera archipelago is a true sustainable paradise, declared a

National Maritime Terrestrial Park

in 1991.

With more than 90,000 hectares of extension and located in Cabrera, the main island that gives its name to the archipelago, this national park is home to an explosion of diversity both on the surface and in its incredible

seabed.

In it we find an enormous biotic wealth, important colonies of

seabirds,

endemic species and coastal landscapes that have remained practically unaltered throughout history thanks to its

conservation and isolation conditions.

Over the years, the national park has received outstanding protection figures, among which are the

Special Conservation

Area, Specially Protected Area of Importance for the Mediterranean (ZEPIM) and

Special Protection Area for Birds

(ZEPA). ).

Currently the Cabrera National Maritime Park has become the national laboratory against

climate change,

thanks to the

Virtual Mar

scientific project

developed by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO).

Fortifications with dream views

Located in the same national park and 72 meters above sea level, we find one of the historical icons of the island of Cabrera: its

castle

.

The origins of this famous fortification date back to the year 1410 and from its tower we can see impressive views of the

islet of sa Conillera,

the mouth of the port with the tip of sa Creueta and the Llebeig cape, the cove of Es Forn, s' Espalmador and

sa Platgeta.

Sustainability, a pillar of the Balearic Islands

With the aim of promoting

sustainability

, the Balearic institutions created in 2016 the Fund for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism, dedicated to the collection of income from the so-called

Sustainable Tourism Tax

(ITS) charged by the tourist accommodation of the four islands to your guests.

The blue lizard, an endemic species of the Cabrera archipelago.

The collection of these funds is intended for different projects that help alleviate the

negative effects of tourism

, such as the Cabrera Castle restoration project, started in 2020, the recovery of habitats in the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park and the Environmental Sustainability project of the Cabrera National Park.

Finally, it should be noted that, in order to protect one of the natural wonders of the Mediterranean, all visitors must request a

special permit

to be able to navigate and dive through the incredible waters of the Natural Park of the island of Cabrera.
