Steinman and artist Meat Loaf had a long collaboration which resulted in the iconic albums "Bat out of hell" and "Bat out of hell II".

- There is no other songwriter like him.

I can never pay back, he has been the biggest influence of my life and I have learned so much from him, said Meat Loaf at Steinman's inauguration of the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012.

Jim Steinman was born in New York in 1947 and wrote his first musical "The dream engine" while studying in college.

He started writing music for artists such as Bette Midler and Yvonne Elliman.

When he wrote the musical "More than you deserve" there was a young actor named Marvin Lee Aday in the ensemble and the two started making music together.

They had a hard time getting a record deal but eventually managed to release "Bat out of hell" in 1977 on Cleveland International Records.

The album has sold about 50 million copies.

During the late 70's and 80's, Steinman wrote hits not only for Meat Loaf but also with Barbra Streisand, Sisters of Mercy and he produced several Bonnie Tyler records.

He also made film music, including "Shrek 2".

According to TMZ, the cause of death has not yet been determined.
