Reporting police checks on apps like Waze or Coyote can now be banned temporarily and in some cases.

The new measure, however, does not apply to speed controls.

From November 1, the prefects or the Minister of the Interior will be able to prohibit the "rebroadcasting of any message or any indication issued by users" of such GPS applications, according to the decree published this Tuesday in

the Official Journal

.

This provision is limited to blood alcohol and narcotics checks and roadblocks.

Suspensions still temporary

The suspension may not last more than two hours for alcohol and drug controls and no more than twelve hours for roadblocks, which allow the arrest of wanted persons.

The Prefect will be able to communicate to the applications concerned the time and place of the checks, within a radius of ten kilometers or two kilometers in built-up areas.

On Tuesday, Coyote said his goal was "to bring more safety" to its members by "helping them to adapt their speed and their driving".

“The cases of one-off inhibitions provided for by the decree […] do not fall within this framework,” added the French company.

“So we have no qualms [to apply them].

"

Speed controls not affected

The League for the Defense of Drivers, however, fears “the next step”, namely “the eventual ban on reporting road checks”.

For an official of the association, road users are already too often "the target of laws and decrees aimed at expanding an already overdeveloped repressive arsenal".

The National Assembly had opted in June 2019 for this principle of temporary blocking of the signaling of road checks under the mobility law.

Speed controls, the possible introduction of which was controversial in the midst of the “yellow vests” crisis, had not been included in the law.
