Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) has defended the planned nocturnal curfews when there are high numbers of corona infections. "A look abroad shows that all countries that have got the high numbers of infections under control again have resorted to exit restrictions in phases," said Schäuble before the vote on the Corona emergency brake in the Bundestag to the Berlin "Tagesspiegel". Schäuble considers curfews to be a “proportionate means” despite legal concerns and threatened lawsuits. The contacts would have to be drastically reduced, he said.

Schäuble admitted that it was not yet clear whether the law would be enough to break the third wave of pandemics. “No doctor knows whether these are exactly the right decisions. We all don't know and have to keep learning from the experience, ”he said. The CDU politician also appealed to people to take responsibility: "Regardless of prohibitions and controls: each individual can contribute to breaking the third wave with the right behavior," said Schäuble.

Schäuble rejected criticism of the federal government's right of enforcement in the amendment to the Infection Protection Act.

“I think that comparisons with Weimar, which individuals employ, are completely wrong,” he said.

The law is limited in time - according to the latest status until June 30th.

The Federal Government will also need the approval of the Bundestag and Bundesrat for further measures in the future.

There could be no question of self-empowerment, said Schäuble.
