The delivery of this new prison, which will offer 850 places, is scheduled for 2027. The objective is in particular to resolve the overcrowding problem with which the remand center, which currently has less than 300 places, is frequently confronted with. . The announcement of the Minister of Justice also confirms the contemporary art center project that the city of Angers wishes to establish on the site of the current prison once it has been transferred.

Since 1997, the prison has been listed as a historical monument for its interior parts.
