The President of Chad, Idriss Deby Itno, died on Tuesday, April 20.

He was wounded in the fighting, according to army spokesman General Azem Bermandoa Agouna.

At the head of Chad since his coup d'état of December 2, 1990, he had just been re-elected for a sixth term at the head of the country.

With its disappearance, France loses its main ally within the G5 Sahel.

For now, a military council will be at the head of the country.
