7.00 The WHO warns that coronavirus infections among people aged 25 to 59 "are soaring in a very worrying way"

The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has warned that infections and income from coronavirus among people aged 25 to 59 years "are skyrocketing in a very worrying way."

During his speech at the press conference on Monday, Tedros pointed out that this increase is

"possibly" due to the greater transmissibility of the new strains

and to "less social distancing among the youngest."

In this context, the director general of the WHO has assured that this pandemic can be contained "in a matter of months", but as long as the necessary measures are applied "in a systematic and equitable manner".

7.00 The EMA advises that the second dose of Pfizer and Moderna must be administered as indicated on their package insert.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has warned the EFE agency this Monday that the authorized Covid-19 vaccines "must be used as described in the product leaflet", which translates into two doses with " three weeks "difference between the first and second in the case of Pfizer / BioNTech and" 28 days "for Moderna.

Asked about

the possibility that Spain approves increasing the interval between the first and second injection of Pfizer and Moderna

between six or eight weeks in people under 79 years of age, instead of the 21 and 28 days defined in the current strategy respectively, the EMA warned that "covid-19 vaccines should be used as described in the product information."

A source from the Agency told Efe that the information on the product of the Pfizer vaccine (also known as Comirnaty) "establishes that the two doses must be administered three weeks apart" to achieve the same efficacy confirmed by clinical trials.

Its package insert highlights that "the efficacy analyzes included participants who received their second vaccination within 19 to 42 days after their first vaccination," but it is also noted that "the majority (93.1%) of vaccine recipients they received the second dose 19 to 23 days after the first, "making the latter interval the one supported by Pfizer clinical trials.

7.00 Health does not rule out giving a second dose of AstraZeneca to those under 60 years of age

The director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, assured this Monday that the AstraZeneca vaccine is having a "very good result" in controlling the epidemic and "it has not yet been completely ruled out" to give the second dose to those under 60 years of age already vaccinated.

However, "there will be age groups, not all, for which it is possible that the second dose is AstraZeneca or even that it is decided to apply a different one", but this is the object of study in technical discussions.

The epidemiologist has shown his "pride" that Spain can provide information "to the whole world" on this matter thanks to the first clinical trial that will analyze in 600 people the possibility of administering a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine to those who have already received a first of AstraZeneca, and that has been launched by the Carlos III Health Institute.

Although the trial focuses on this combination, Simón has pointed out that "it has not yet been completely ruled out" if those already vaccinated with AstraZeneca are going to be injected with the second dose of the same brand.

"AstraZeneca is having a very good result in controlling the epidemic and is generating minimal effects", highlighted the director of the CCAES.

The Public Health Commission is also studying the possibility of increasing the separation interval for the second doses of coronavirus vaccines for those under 79 years of age in order to inoculate the serum as soon as possible to the largest number of vulnerable people.

7.00 The EMA pronounces today on the Janssen vaccine, key in the vaccination strategy

The vaccination strategy is pending key decisions, some of which, such as what to do with the administration of Janssen's vaccine, have to be resolved at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) this Tuesday, the day on which the Health Commission Public meets with several issues of draft for debate.

At a time when the autonomous communities are warning of the lack of vaccines, the pronouncement of the European Agency on the administration of Janssen will be key.

The EMA has investigated the six cases of very rare thrombi detected in patients vaccinated with this single dose in the United States, where some 6.8 million people have already received the serum from this Johnson & Johnson subsidiary.

A favorable pronouncement will speed up immunizations in Europe, which has pre-contracted 400 million doses of this brand.

Spain has stored the first 150,000 Janssen vaccines, which arrived just when the pharmaceutical company decided to stop the distribution as a precautionary measure.

This Monday, one of the drafts in which the Public Health Commission is working was known, where the advisability of increasing the interval between the first and the second dose of the coronavirus vaccine for those under 79 years of age is addressed, with the In order to speed up the inoculation of at least one serum to the greatest number of vulnerable people, in line with what Great Britain has done.

7.00 The consumption of Omega-3 or vitamin D can reduce the risk of testing positive for covid-19

Taking multivitamins, probiotics, omega-3s or vitamin D supplements can reduce the risk of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for covid-19, at least among women, the British Medical Journal publishes this Monday. Nutition Prevention & Health (BMJ).

Meanwhile, taking supplements of vitamin C, zinc or garlic was not associated with a lower risk of testing positive for the virus, according to the study that appears in that medical publication.

Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, according to experts from Imperial College London, emphasis was placed on the benefit of supplements to prevent and treat covid-19 infection.

In the United Kingdom, as a result of the first lockdown started on March 23 last year, there was a significant increase in sales of vitamin C and also multivitamins.

Dietary supplements can help maintain a healthy immune system, but it is not yet known whether specific supplements may be associated with a lower risk of contracting the covid virus.
