• Antonio López: "Art is a risky profession"

The painter

Antonio López hopes to return to the Puerta del Sol this summer

to finish the Madrid landscape that he began to paint and left in 2010. «This summer, God willing, I would like to continue the painting that I started years ago, at Puerta del Sun, so I'll come in the afternoon. 11 years ago, López settled at kilometer zero in Madrid. Described then as a man dressed

in shorts, worn espadrilles, a striped shirt and a red cap,

the painter spent that summer painting from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. His plan was to dedicate three summers to that task, but he could not continue. The Casa de Correo, the headquarters of the presidency of the Community of Madrid, was the warehouse where López kept his material that summer.

López's announcement came yesterday at the opening of a free exhibition with two huge sculptures of the artist's baby heads at the Casa de Correos. The pieces portray his granddaughter and reflect on the image of children's childhood. At the opening of the exhibition, the Madrid president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, pointed out that it is

the beginning of an exhibition project promoted by the Community of Madrid

so that the "symbolic" headquarters in Puerta del Sol contribute to bringing citizens a series of of works by "important creators of Spain", as he is

dressed in shorts, worn espadrilles and a striped shirt

.

Ayuso has encouraged you to see this exhibition, which will run until June 20 and involves "a different way of seeing childhood", since "culture is safe" and it is "food for the heart and soul."

He also stressed that

the image of Antonio López "has been linked to the image of Madrid."

"Without Antonio López Madrid cannot be understood," said the president.

Antonio López (Tomelloso, 1936) is one of the most prominent active multidisciplinary creators on the national and international scene and has developed a very personal work, linked to the generation of realists of the 1950s.

In his role as a sculptor, López stands out for the production of his

huge baby heads

, with two of them,

Day and Night

, permanently located in the Atocha Station, where they represent the author's granddaughter with just six months. Those that are now exhibited in the Royal Post Office are entitled

Carmen awake

and

Carmen asleep

and are two portraits of the same girl, which symbolize "the energy of the beginning of life through those childish features, executed on a large scale". as detailed by the Community in a statement.

Thus, both works try to reflect "the suspended time of everyday reality, through the delicate features of a baby".

Antonio López arrived in Madrid when he was just 13 years old to enter the Real Academia de San Fernando

and since then his life has been linked to the city.

Throughout his extensive career he has created a work of timeless air and great technical virtuosity, focused on the realistic representation of beings and objects.

Considered the master of hyperrealism, Antonio López

belonged to a historical group of painters and sculptors who have lived and worked in Madrid, also made up of artists such as Amalia Avia, Francisco López, Julio López, María Moreno, Esperanza Parada and Isabel Quintanilla
