Obese people under the age of 50 still do not have access to vaccination, as many doctors warn of the influx of young and overweight patients in intensive care units.

the League Against Obesity is calling for a reassessment of the age criterion for the vaccination of these people.

More than 12.5 million French people have received at least one injection of an anti-Covid vaccine, which represents 18.5% of the total population (and 4.5 million people have received both doses).

Vaccination is now open to all over 55s and 50-54 with co-morbidities.

People suffering from obesity who are over 50 therefore fall into this last category, but nothing is yet planned for all those who are under 50, and who are however very vulnerable to Covid-19.

Coronavirus: follow the evolution of the situation Monday April 19

There are around 3.5 million French people under the age of 50 who suffer from obesity.

This is the case of Alina Constantin, 45 years old.

For months, she has left her home very little to avoid catching the virus.

She tried to get the vaccine prescribed from her doctor, but nothing could be done.

And today she does not understand why obese people are not a priority in the vaccination campaign.

“The intensive care units are congested by overweight or obese people, more and more young. The reality is there!”, She points out to Europe 1. “This is not normal . We are not second class citizens! "

"There are inequalities in the territory"

Some obese people under the age of 50 manage to get vaccinated by cunning.

An inconsistency highlighted by Agnès Maurin, co-founder of the League against obesity: "There are inequalities in the territory. This weekend, the ARS of the Grand-Est and the prefect requested the opening of a center vaccination program dedicated to obese patients from the age of 18, ”she reports.

"This means that when you live in Strasbourg, you can get vaccinated if you are 20 years old, but not elsewhere on the territory."

Agnès Maurin urgently calls for vaccination for all obese people without age criteria.

She puts forward a figure to emphasize the urgency of the situation: nearly 40,000 people suffering from obesity have died of Covid-19 since the start of the crisis.
