A large fire in South Africa's tourist metropolis Cape Town has affected considerable areas of the famous Table Mountain.

The slopes above the Newlands district were in flames on Sunday, these destroyed the popular Rhodes Memorial Restaurant and spread further towards the university, announced the city and university on Twitter on Sunday.

More than 120 firefighters and the crews of five helicopters equipped for fire fighting fought for hours against the flames.

Two firefighters were injured during the operation.

Late on Sunday afternoon, the fire spread to the university campus and destroyed several buildings and a library with rare and historical books.

Hundreds of students living on campus were evacuated, it said.

In addition, South Africa's oldest windmill, Mostert's Mill, built in 1796, burned down.

Authorities called for the area, which is popular with residents and visitors, to be vacated immediately.

According to rescue services, the fire broke out on Sunday morning. The cause of the fire was probably a campfire lit by a homeless person, it said. Table Mountain is the landmark of Cape Town, it is under nature protection. Serious fires are common in South Africa's dry season.
